What if friction is the point?

There is no meaning without friction.

We're automating everything. Not just work, but relationships, community, parenting, the moments that make us who we are. Each optimization promises the same trade: arrive faster, experience less.

But here's the paradox: what if AI isn't the thing stealing our humanity, what if it's the thing that finally makes it possible to reclaim it? What if clearing away the meaningless friction is exactly what gives us the capacity to choose the friction that matters?

Friction by Design is a weekly essay series exploring that question. Each piece tells a real story. From a sidewalk, a hospital room, a protest, a kitchen table, where someone chose meaningful friction over a frictionless experience, and built something no algorithm could.

I call that the friction worth choosing.

There is no meaning without friction.
